Diabetic Foot Care Guidelines

Caring for your feet is especially important for those living with diabetes because the disease can damage nerves and reduce blood flow to the feet. If not treated, foot wounds can send a person with diabetes to the hospital and possibly lead to amputation of the foot or leg. You can avoid foot problems and serious medical conditions by taking proper care of your feet including:

  • Treat cuts, bumps or sores carefully
  • Pay attention to pain, change in color or infection
  • Wash and inspect feet regularly
  • Take care of your toes
  • Change socks daily
  • Wear proper fitting shoes
  • Be careful when exercising
